Loreena McKennitt

[V.I.T.R.I.O.L.]

Loreena McKennitt (d. 17 Şubat 1957), Kanadalı vokalist, arpist ve piyanisttir. Özellikle güçlü ve duygulu sesiyle yorumladığı Kelt şarkılarıyla ve ünlü şiirleri Kelt müziğinin yapısına uygun bir biçimde besteleyip seslendirmesiyle tanınır. Ayrıca birçok unutulmuş anonim halk müziğini modern bir anlayışla yeniden diriltmiştir. Kanada'da Manitoba'ya bağlı küçük bir kırsal yerleşim olan Morden'de doğup büyüyen McKennitt, 1978'de Dumaurier yetenek taramasını kazandı, ülkesini aynı yıl UNESCO'nun Paris merkezinde ve yeniden 1985'te Japonya'daki Expo'da temsil etti. 1980'lerde Kanada’nın ünlü Shakespeare Festivaline ev sahipliği yapan Stratford'a (Ontario) taşındı; "The Tempest" (1982) ve "The Two Gentlemen Of Verona" (1984) dahil, çeşitli festival prodüksiyonlarında oyuncu, şarkıcı ve besteci olarak yer aldı. 2001 ilkbaharında festivale Richard Monette'in "The Merchant Of Venice" prodüksiyonunun bestecisi olarak döndü.

1985'te McKennitt, "Elemental" adli ilk albümünü kaydederek çiftlik evinin önünden geçen köy yolunun adini taşıyan, çiçeği burnunda "Quinland Road" etiketi ile piyasaya sürdü. 1987 ve 1989'daki iki yeni albüm ve başarılı canlı performansları artan bir ilgi çekerek 1991'de Warner Music Canada ile yeni bir başlangıç oluşturacak nitelikte bir dağıtım anlaşması imzaladı; bunun ilk meyvesi olan "The Visit", uluslararası bir başarı kazanarak altın ve platin ödülleri listesinde ancak sanatçının diğer albümleri olan 1994'te "The Mask and Mirror" ve hatta daha da ötesi, dünya çapında hit olan "The Book of Secrets" geçebildi.

Peter Gabriel'in Wiltshire'daki Real World stüdyolarında kaydedilen "The Book of Secrets" Billboard Top 20 single olurken MTV video hiti "The Mummers' Dance" gerek ABD radyosunda gerek dünya çapında büyük bir başarı kazandı. Albüm dünya çapında dört milyonu aşan satış rakamlarını yakaladı. Önceki iki albüm gibi Billboard World Music listelerini tırmanarak listenin şimdiye dek en basarili "crossover" albümü oldu. Ayrıca Yunanistan ve Türkiye'nin albüm listelerine ilk kez girip 1 numaraya yerleşirken Kanada'da 3 numara olmanın yanı sıra, İtalya, Yeni Zelanda ve Almanya listelerinde ilk 10, ABD, İspanya ve Fransa listelerinde ise ilk 20 arasına girdi.

McKennitt, Kanada müzik endüstrisinin yıllık ödülü olan Juno'yu iki kez kazandı. Ayrıca kendisine 1997'de Billboard'un uluslararası başarı ödülü verildi. Bugüne dek ABD, Kanada, Avustralya, Yeni Zelanda, Brezilya, Fransa, İspanya, İtalya, Yunanistan ve Türkiye’de altın, platin ve çoklu platin sertifikaları elde etti.

Çeşitli filmler için müzik besteledi ve şarkıları çeşitli filmlerde yer aldı. Bunlar arasında "Jade", "Highlander III", "The Holy Man", "Soldier" ve "The Santa Clause" gibi Hollywood prodüksiyonlarının yani sıra Kanada Ulusal Film Kurulunun "Women And Spirituality" dizisi ve Jean-Claude Lauzon'un "Léolo" filmi yer almaktadır. Bir süre önce, 2001 yılında gösterime girmesi planlanan bir Kanada/Venezüella ortak yapımı olan "A House With A view Of The Sea" filminde kullanılmak üzere "Dante's Prayer" parçasının İspanyolca versiyonunu kaydetti. Eserleri ayrıca "Northern Exposure", "Due South", "Legacy", "Ez Streets", "Boston Public", "Big Kevin Little Kevin" ve "Strange Luck" gibi BİR ÇOK televizyon dizisinde de yer aldı. Loreena McKennitt ve müziği hakkında 1997 yılında yapılan 30-dakikalık bir belgesel olan "No Journey's End" gerek ABD gerekse diğer ülkelerin televizyonlarında yaygın biçimde gösterildi.

1999'da Loreena McKennitt, son kaydı olan ve grubu ile birlikte Salle Pleyel ve Massey Hall'de kaydedilen "Live In Paris and Toronto" isimli iki CD'li seti çikardi. Hayır amaçlı bir proje olan bu albüm, 1998'de Georgia Körfezindeki bir deniz kazasında yaşamlarını yitiren üç adam için Loreena McKennitt'in Ronald ve Richard Rees ile Greg Cook'un aileleriyle birlikte Kanada’da kurduğu "Rhe Cook-Rees Memorial Fund For Water Search and Safety" adlı kuruluşa gelir sağlamaktadır.

His coal-black curls as on he rode,
As he rode down to Camelot.
From the bank and from the river
He flashed into the crystal mirror,
"Tirra lirra" by the river
Sang Sir Lancelot.

She left the web, she left the loom,
She made three paces thro' the room,
She saw the water-lily bloom,
She saw the helmet and the plume,
She look'd down to Camelot.
Out flew the web and floated wide;
The mirror crack'd from side to side;
"The Curse is come upon me," cried
The Lady of Shalott.

And down the river's dim expanse
Like some bold seer in a trance,

Bu sanatciyi ben de cok seviyorum ve butun albumleri var evde...Kendisi batinin ve dogunun harmanlamasini harikulade yapan usta bir yorumcu ve maneviyati da bir o kadar guclu olan yuzyilin gercek sanatcilarindan...Insanin icini oksayan kadife gibi,  muzik camiasindan pek coguyla kiyas goturmeyecegine  inandigim iddiali bir sesi var.

Butun sarkilarini cok seviyorum aslinda. Belki biraz daha fazla olarak Bonny Portmore, The Lady of Shalott ve Stolen Child 'i  seviyorum...Iyi ki dogdun Loreena.Ruhuma ne kadar iyi geldi sesin bir bilsen! Ingiltere'ye gelecegin gunu dort gozle bekliyorum..!Zira seninle tanismayi cok istiyorum...
